PROACTIVE COMMUNICATION FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Project Overview

The City of Fond du Lac engaged Mueller Communications to help build a strategic communications plan to increase awareness and engagement between the city and its almost 45,000 residents.

The Challenge

Before engaging with Mueller Communications, the City recognized that it often overloaded residents with information and did not have guidelines on how to strategically connect with residents. City leaders knew there was a need to improve their communications, but didn’t know what changes they needed to make.

The Solution

A partnership with Mueller Communications put the City on the right track to develop and implement a strategic communications plan by thoroughly assessing the current state of its communications.
  • Mueller developed and deployed a survey of Fond du Lac residents to better understand how residents currently engage with the City, what information is most important to them and how they prefer to receive information. The survey was completed by more than 1,200 residents and business owners.
  • Mueller conducted a comprehensive audit of the City’s various communications channels to determine messaging, content mix, audience, posting cadence and engagement as well as to identify opportunities for improvement and alignment with industry best practices.
  • The Mueller team interviewed 10 of the City’s department heads and key team members to understand the current state of communications efforts, perceived areas of strength and future needs.

The Results

Leveraging the insights from the research process, Mueller worked with the City to build a comprehensive communications approach that expanded its reach with key audiences through owned channels (social media, website and newsletters) as well as earned media (newspaper, radio and TV). Mueller and Fond du Lac staff are working together to implement improvements across all communications channels and develop consistent, compelling content for City residents.
