What it Takes to be a Best Place to Work

By James Madlom and Lori Richards

This year, Mueller Communications received its fifth consecutive Milwaukee Business Journal Best Places to Work designation. We think we’ve got something special here at Mueller, and we’re happy to share some insights into what makes Mueller such a special place.

When we became CEOs of the firm in 2020, we started by defining a set of principles to guide how we wanted to build our team and the firm. For us, it boils down to ensuring our place of business provides these simple core elements to members of our team:

  • Have fun at work
  • Enjoy your life too
  • Seek growth opportunities, personally and professionally

We have worked hard to create a place where people are excited to work – a place where they have fun because they get to do great work, for great clients with great colleagues. We value psychological safety, where we all realize we’re human and can make mistakes – we focus on the lesson learned and move forward together. It’s why we’re so motivated to find opportunities to do work that is challenging and fulfilling, to do it better than anyone else — and yes, to have fun.

We also want everyone to have a life outside of the office. It’s more than just work-life balance, it’s realizing our most important jobs aren’t as CEOs, but rather they’re as spouses, parents and friends. We are committed to creating a flexible work environment so that each individual can help craft the schedule that works for them. Need to schedule around your kids’ soccer game? Go for it. Need to get your hair cut in the middle of the day, no sweat! Everyone’s situations and needs are different and they change over time. We want employees to have a happy, fulfilled and successful life that is supported and enabled by work. We love the fact that we get to do impactful work with people we enjoy and admire, but the most important, deep and meaningful relationships are with people outside of our walls – and we want those relationships to thrive.

And, finally, we want to make sure that we are always looking for opportunities to learn and grow – both as individuals and as a firm. As individual team members, we value a culture of continual learning. We are constantly learning new skills and about new industries. We encourage our teammates to look for ways to grow their skills and talents, adding value for the team, the clients we serve and the community through things like board service and pro-bono work. When we do that, we position ourselves to build our client base and grow as a firm.

That growth enables us to further invest in core values we established nearly 10 years ago, which we believe makes us a Best Place to Work.
