Mueller Communications is searching for its next rockstar summer intern. If you’re reading this post, you’ve just uncovered an amazing opportunity to receive a $2,000 scholarship and a full-time paid internship at our historic (and might we add, lively) East Side digs. Even better? You won’t spend your days organizing files or fetching coffee, here. You’ll gain real-world experience to help you accelerate to the next phase of your career.

Our team of smart-as-a-whip professionals has extensive experience in research; strategic communications; crisis and corporate communications; government and public affairs; and digital content marketing. This year, Milwaukee is set to take the stage for the Democratic National Convention. Publications such as Forbes and Vogue have called Milwaukee a “hidden gem,” as well as one of the next big travel destinations for a leisure getaway.
To be considered for the 2020 Barkin McKeithan Scholarship program, we want to know about your favorite hidden Milwaukee spot or activity with an original entry piece. You don’t have to write a novel or make a feature film — just find your **creative** zen and demonstrate your professional potential with your unique submission.
Entry examples could include:
A media campaign (press release, mock news conference, broadcast, or original article)
A narrative essay
A vlog video or series
An ad campaign w/ creative
A “TED Talk”
The possibilities are endless!
In addition to your entry, please include your resume and a one-page cover letter that includes your name, project title and brief project description, and a brief explanation as to why you would be a good addition to the Mueller team.
You must also meet these requirements:
Enrolled as a full-time student at a Wisconsin college or university, or be from Wisconsin if you’re enrolled out of state;
Entering senior year in the fall of 2020; and
Must be available to participate in the Mueller Communications full-time internship program in Milwaukee during the summer of 2020.

Heather Laing is currently an Associate at McKinsey & Company, a management consulting company in Chicago. Before joining McKinsey & Company, Ms. Laing worked at KB Partners, Ross Stores, Inc. and Macy's Department Store. After completing the Ben Barkin Internship, Ms. Laing graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and went on to continue her education at Harvard Business School in 2016.
Lauren Peter is currently a financial advisor at Northwestern Mutual. After completing the Ben Barkin Internship, Ms. Peter worked with Autism Speaks- Wisconsin/Iowa, Best Buddies International, Mandel Group, Inc. and the Milwaukee Bucks. Ms. Peter graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations, marketing and economics.
Rachel Kern currently works as the Public Relations Coordinator for Baird. Prior to this, Ms. Kern continued to work at Mueller Communications full-time after completing the Ben Barkin Internships. In 2015, she graduated from Marquette University with a Bachelor of Arts in public relations, advertising and film studies.
Julia Markun is currently a Senior Public Relations Coordinator at Kohl's. After completing the Ben Barkin Internship, Ms. Markun worked as an associate
full-time at Mueller Communications. Ms. Markun graduated from Marquette University in May 2016 with a degree in public relations.
Mary DeChant currently works as an Account Executive at BVK. After completing the Ben Barkin Internship, Ms. DeChant went on to intern at Hoffman York and Walt Disney World. Ms. DeChant graduated from Marquette University in 2017 with a degree in public relations, advertising and applied communication.
Savannah Akinsanya works as a Diversity Events Specialist at Lyft in New York. Following her internship at Mueller Communications, Ms. Akinsanya worked for the Indianapolis Colts and Sparks. Ms. Akinsanya graduated from Ball State University in 2018 with a degree in public relations and marketing.
Jesus Rivera currently works at Kane Communications Group as an associate. Following his internship at Mueller, Mr. Rivera worked as a Law Enforcement Public Relations Contractor and as a Media Relations Specialist for the Milwaukee Police Department. In May of 2019, Mr. Rivera graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee with a degree in communications.
Lauren Goetz is currently the Ben Barkin Intern at Mueller Communications. Ms. Goetz is a senior at Marquette University studying public relations, history and political science. Ms. Goetz volunteers for the Marquette Student Alumni Association and is a member of the Marquette PRSSA.
